Landfill Remediation
Development of Landfills and adjacent areas for commercial or residential uses is one of the most geotechnically challenging aspects of our practice. Irrespective of the obvious environmental issues, landfills have their own unique engineering characteristics. Most significantly in development over old landfills is the potential future settlement of the site due to the consolidation of refuse. Different types of refuse produce different settlement characteristics; however, irrespective of the type of refuse, the variable material present within the landfill and the compaction criteria during placement usually results in sites not being developable without some type of engineered remediation. Remediation may take the form of such things as deep pile support of buildings, ground improvement by grout injection, dynamic compaction or surcharging. LGC has worked on different landfill sites to assist the owner in developing a value engineered solution to the particular site characteristics.
